Below are some unique opportunities for our GSA students!  Take advantage of these and be sure to let Ms. Beckman and Mr. Faust know when you apply and if you get accepted.  Many of our students have already taken advantage of these opportunities!  If you come across any others, be sure to let us know!  Are you a junior or senior applying to college?  Be sure to check the Clements Counseling page for scholarships.

The GSABC sponsors up to 10 travel grants each year for students enrolled on a school-approved study abroad program.  Travel grants are awarded in the amount of $500 or $250.  Approved programs for the 2014-2015 SY are:

3. Scotland/Ireland

4. Switzerland, Italy, & France (BHS)

 

Applications became available on December 15, 2014 and are due on January 21, 2015.  Grants are awarded at the annual banquet held in May.

The National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) program, sponsored by theU.S. Department of State, provides merit-based scholarships for eligible high school students and recent high school graduates to learn less commonly taught languages in summer and academic-year overseas immersion programs.  Deadline October 30, 2014.

To be an engaged citizen in our evolving global environment and to succeed beyond college, today’s students require a rich understanding of the world beyond the United States. Mercy College’s International Relations and Diplomacy Summer Fellowship Program will offer your students the practical skills and understanding they need to participate in our changing world. With the prestigious status of an NGO associated with the United Nations, Mercy College holds a distinctive position in offering this competitive summer program. Selected students will receive program materials, accommodations, transportation to and from the airports and meals at no cost..​  Application deadline TBA but usually falls in April.

In order to recognize, support, and encourage the young people of our country who have demonstrated a commitment to advancing the cause of positive race relations, Princeton University sponsors an annual awards program for high school students—the Princeton Prize in Race Relations. Applications postmarked by January 31, 2015, will be eligible for prizes—including cash awards up to $1,000 for particularly noteworthy work.If you are a high school student involved in an activity that is helping to improve race relations in your school or community, we want to hear from you.If you know of a high school student who is helping to improve race relations, please encourage him or her to apply.The Princeton Prize in Race Relations was created to identify and commend young people who are working to increase understanding and mutual respect among all races. Through this effort, we hope to inspire others to join in these or similar efforts, and to undertake initiatives of their own.

SPECIAL PROGRAMS & STUDY ABROAD

The Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange (CBYX) program is for motivated high school students who want to experience a culture and learn a language through a full immersion experience. Earn a competitive edge for your college applications. Learn about German culture first-hand by living with a host family and attending a German high school. Connect to an elite network of U.S. Department of State program alumni. Embark on an adventure that is unlike any other.As a CBYX participant, you will gain new perspectives on global current affairs and German social, economic and political life. You will learn the German language through immersion in the culture at school and at home. When you return after 10 months abroad, you will have a greater sense of independence, empowerment, and global citizenry. You will make friendships through a shared experience that will last a lifetime, and you will become a true member of another culture. Application Deadline:  January 31, 2015.

The American Youth Leadership Program is a leadership training exchange program for U.S. high school students and adult mentors. Participants travel abroad to gain firsthand knowledge of foreign cultures and to examine globally significant issues, such as the environment and climate change, food security and nutrition, the role of the media, and science and technology. Programs involve homestays with local families, language lessons, leadership training, and community service opportunities. Participants implement a follow-on project in their communities once they return home.  Destinations vary each year.

 

American Youth Leadership participants study community development, civic engagement, and leadership theories and practice through a four-week International Training. During their International Training, participants learn about and engage with Ecuadorian history and culture through host family stays, service work with US and Ecuadorian peers, and visits to cultural and historic sites. Participants receive hands on experience in the design and implementation of Community-Based Initiative (CBI). After returning home from the International Training, each participant carries out a community service project in his/her home community.

The Gulen Institute Youth Platform has announced its fifth international essay contest, which is open to all high school students in grades 9th through 12th currently enrolled in public or private schools from across the nation and abroad. Students are invited to address global challenges and propose potential solutions based on their own research and experience. Contest winners will also be invited to participate in a platform held in Washington DC, at which they will have the opportunity to share their ideas and listen to their peers from around the world. With this program, We hope to provide a chance for youth from around the world to engage each other in discussion and to advance cross-cultural understanding. 

 

Deadline for essay submission is December 15, 2014.

The YES Abroad program provides merit-based scholarships for eligible high school students to develop a perspective of a Muslim culture first-hand. Participants spend an academic year attending a high school while living with a host family in select countries with significant Muslim populations. A network of support through partner international exchange organizations, field staff, trained volunteers, and carefully selected host families helps ensure a successful exchange experience.

In June 2015, recipients of our annual Global Citizen Scholarship will travel free to our Global Student Leaders Summit, examining Innovation and the Future of Education. They’ll explore London, Paris and Davos, Switzerland, collaborating with globally minded students from around the world to solve pressing issues in global education.

High school students can apply by sharing their ideas about innovation and education. 

 

Deadline for submission is October 31, 2014.

 

 

 

An official Yale University program, participants in the Yale Young Global Scholars Program for Outstanding High School Students can expect an amazing summer experience studying in beautiful campus lecture halls and classrooms, living in Yale’s historic residential colleges, eating in award-winning dining halls, meeting a talented community of fellow students, engaging with world-renowned professors, and interacting with extraordinary visiting practitioners.

If you are a teenager (16 to 19 years old) and enrolled in full-time education you can join us on a High School Special. Each volunteer project follows a schedule of taught sessions, hands-on and observational service work, as well as evening activities and weekend excursions. Lasting two to four weeks, these teen volunteer abroad programs are designed to make the most of your short time abroad while contributing to your community service credit requirements or college applications.

The THINK Scholars Program is an educational outreach initiative that promotes science, technology, engineering, and mathematics by supporting and funding projects developed by high school students. The program is run by a team of undergraduate students at MIT and sponsored by technology companies and educational organizations. Six finalists will be selected and receive an all expenses paid trip to MIT to attend Techfair, $2000 budget to build their project, and $500 cash prize ($1000 for grand prize winner). You  may have up to two students per project

 

Deadline for submission is January 1, 2015.

 

 

Calling all high school students!  National Geographic wants to hear how you are making a difference in the world and giving back to your communities. Whether it's tutoring kids at your local elementary school or raising awareness about widlife conservation in Africa, we invite you to create an original video (90 seconds or less) that highlights an organization, project, or initiative you're currently involved in--near or far--and why you're passionate about it. 

 

The Grand Prize Winner will receive a summer 2015 National Geographic Student Expeditions Community Service Trip chosen from one of these five destinations: Costa Rica, Peru, Nepal, Fiji, or Thailand; as well as a $500 donation for the project or initiative featured in the video.  2nd and 3rd place prizes are also awarded in the form of monetary donations to the project/initiative in the applicant's video.

Through the generosity of numberous corporations, governments, foundations, and individuals, YFU awards more than $1.6 million in partial or full study abroad scholarships annually. To be considered for scholarship awards, you must meet eligibility requirements listed on teh individual scholarship inofrmation sheets and deomonstrate characteristics like flexibility, tolerance, and open-mindedness. Some scholarships are country specific, whereas others allow you to rank your country preferences. Scholarships are awarded based on a comprehensive evaluation process. A selection committee reviews all aplication materials and you will be contacted for an interview. Notifications to finalists begin in April. 

 

Deadlines for submissions vary but most fall between Dec-Feb.
