Burhanuddhin Calcuttawala awarded a Summer Study Trip to Germany
Burhanuddhin Calcuttawala, a junior in the Global Studies Academy, has been awarded an all-expense-paid summer study trip to Germany. Burhanuddhin was selected as a national winner due to his score on the 2015 National German Exam for High School Students sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of German (AATG). Nearly 21,000 students participated in the program. After qualifying with a high score on the National German Exam, he submitted responses to several short essay questions in German and in English and was then interviewed by a committee comprised of high school teachers and college professors of German. Burhanuddhin is one of forty-four outstanding German students selected from across the US to receive the award. The study trip includes round-trip air transportation to Germany from New York, a homestay in a host family, and excursions to places of cultural and historical significance. The study trip award is made possible through a grant from the Federal Republic of Germany. Founded in 1926, the AATG represents German teachers at all levels of instruction.
Regina Chen is the recipient of a Japan-America Friendship Scholar Scholarship!
Congratulations to Junior Regina Chen from the FBISD Global Studies Academy for being named one of 70 US students as a recipient of the Japan-America Friendship Scholars (JAFS) Scholarship. The JAFS Scholarship contributes $9000 towards a 6-week homestay with a host family in Japan while attending a local Japanese high school. While in Japan, Regina will have the opportunity to understand Japanese culture by participating in activities such as a tea ceremony, flower arranging, local summer festivals, and immersion in the daily life of Japanese student. Scholarship recipients attend a three day orientation at UC Berkley prior to departure. Upon return, scholars must complete at least one presentation at their school to share the experience, teach others about the culture in their host country, and encourage others to participate in foreign exchange. In addition, scholars submit a 2-3 page essay about their experience to the Japanese government to encourage funding for future programs.

With over 4,000 members, the American Association of Teachers of German is for teachers of German at all levels of instruction and all those interested in the teaching of German. Founded in 1926, AATG believes that bringing the language, literature, and cultures of the German speaking world to all Americans is a vital humanistic endeavor, which serves an essential national interest.
